9 Reasons We Fail At Organization

Having an organized space has always been important to me, but the bigger my family has gotten, the harder it is to maintain.

When my home is disorganized it increases my stress level and it limits the efficiency of how our home is run. I don’t have time for that. I need my home to stay maintained so that we can all do what needs to be done.  

Do you ever feel so overwhelmed by the lack of organization in your home that you don’t even try because you don’t know where to begin?

Or maybe you get everything organized, but it only lasts a couple of days before it goes back to utter chaos?

I have been there too.

My friend, if I could, I would love to come to each of your homes and help you bring order to your space. Unfortunately, that isn’t possible, but what I can do, is give you some idea of why you may be failing at organization and how to fix it.  

 9 Reasons We Fail At Organization

 1.     We have too much stuff!!

 I have seen this over and over again in my own home and when I help others organize their spaces.

When we have too much stuff, we can organize it, but it means you have that much more to maintain and keep in order.

When my children were younger, I remember times when they would dump out every single basket and bucket of toys in the middle of the room. They didn’t even want to play with anything after that because it was so overwhelming to look at and be around.

The same was true when it came to clean up, they would say “I can’t”. The idea of cleaning up the mess what too big a task for them; they didn’t know where to start.

The same is true for us when we have too much stuff; we have to be willing to purge and get rid of things. Less stuff=less to clean and organize. 


 2.     We are too busy to stay organized

 To keep your house in order, you have to be home. When we are so busy coming and going, the first thing to go is organization. We just dump everything and move on to the next activity.


3.     We haven’t made organization a priority

 Ok, let’s be honest. How many of us say we want to be organized, but we don’t actually make it a priority? If you want the results, you have to put in the effort. Like going to the gym. We can say, “I want to be fit”, but if we don’t make it a priority, we don’t do anything to move in that direction and nothing changes.


4.     We don’t plan for organization

 I love a good plan! Setting a goal and creating a plan to get there is your road map. Without a plan, it is easy to get distracted and off task.

Create a plan. What do you want to accomplish and when do you want to have it completed by? Set the goal and make a date with yourself to accomplish it. Create time in your schedule for it.


5.     We plan-crastinate

 Plan-crastinating is when we plan and plan…and plan, but never actually get to the doing part. Go to Pinterest if you need ideas for a space, but don’t get stuck there!


6.     We try to copy someone else, instead of doing what works for us

 How often do we try to follow someone else’s plan, just to find out it doesn’t work for us?

It doesn’t mean you’ve failed, it just means that system didn’t work for you. What works for someone else doesn’t mean it will work for us. We all have different spaces, priorities and families.

Organizing your home is an ever-evolving process. Something that works for you today may not work in a couple of years.  That’s ok, don’t be afraid to change things that aren’t working.


7.     We don’t start because it isn’t going to be perfect.

This has been me more times than I can remember. My house has been in complete disorder, but I don’t do anything about it because I don’t have the “right” space, furniture, baskets, etc. I’ve cried and whined, and felt sorry for myself instead of diving in and working with what I did have.

I don’t last long in this situation because the mess gets to me; eventually I pull up my boot straps and get moving. I use what I have on hand and utilize the dollar store.

Over the years we have slowly been able to save for different pieces of furniture and storage containers.  There are still many areas in my house that I would love to have the right “system” in place, but it’s not in the budget at this time. I can’t let that hold me back from organizing now.

It is not realistic for a lot of people to go out and buy the perfect system with all matching organization tools.

Use what you have and don’t wait for perfect.


8.     We don’t have a realistic plan

If your home is in complete disarray, don’t expect to do an overhaul in a day or you will get discouraged.

You will need time and many days...or more. If setting aside a whole week isn’t possible, chip away at it a little at a time. Do a little every day as long as it takes to complete.


9.     We don’t maintain the organization

Once your home has been put in order, you must maintain it. Maintaining it will help keep it under control and it won’t seem as big a task the next time you tackle it.

I tend to do a whole house overhaul 2-3 times a year. There are areas of the house that are put back quickly (junk drawer) and others that take a little more time (basement, since we use it as storage and a dumping area).


Organizing an entire house can seem like a massive job, but ignoring the disorder won’t make it better.

You can have an orderly home. It takes work and some time, but the benefits are worth it!
