To Hell With Halloween

My heart is sad, but there's a part of me that is downright mad.
I love the Fall, but I hate the season change in the stores between back to school and Christmas because of Halloween. Halloween costumes and decorations seem to be getting darker and scarier every year. I remember when scary costumes were less common than the cute, fun ones, but it seems to be reverse now. There’s a fascination with evil that is more prominent now than it was when I was growing up.
Growing up we did not celebrate Halloween. I found that frustrating because what kid doesn’t want to dress up and eat copious amounts of candy!?
When I was 10, I begged my parents for weeks to allow me to go trick or treating with my friends around the neighbourhood. I wore them down with my insistent asking and they finally said yes. I was so excited and got all dressed up in my moms wedding dress. As I waited for my friends, my stomach starter to churn and I started to feel feverish. When my friends finally arrived, I was in bed sick with the stomach flu! I’ll never forget that!
Now as the parent, we are the one saying no to Halloween. Our children play dress up all year long and they do get occasional candy and treats, but this is one day we do not participate in.
For the last 10 years we have tried to avoid the stores as a family at this time of year because of all the Halloween decorations in the store. I would go grocery shopping alone and the kids would stay home with daddy. Some of the displays that were in the store were horrific and we did not want our children seeing them.
When my oldest daughter was younger, she got so freaked out by a display at one of the grocery stores we shop at that, she took off running and just about got run over by a couple of other shoppers.
She was terrified by a horrible Halloween display. It prompted a talk about good and evil and we encouraged her that she didn’t need to fear it because God is with us at all times.
My children are not familiar or comfortable with wickedness. They see if for what it is and that it has no place in God’s kingdom, and they know that they are a part of God’s Kingdom.
We have taught them:
Do not be yoked together with unbelievers. For what do righteousness and wickedness have in common? Or what fellowship can light have with darkness? 2 Cor 6:14 NIV
Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things. Philippians 4:8 NIV
I have always been a questioner. Why do we do what we do? Why are things done the way they are? Maybe that makes me difficult, but I like to know the reason behind things. Just because something has always been done a certain way isn’t enough of a reason for me.
When I was 13, my parents presented me with a pamphlet that was about Halloween; about its origins, who observes it and why. It was awful and even at 13, I decided that trick or treating was not something I wanted to participate in. However, many years later I attended young adults costume party, but it was with the church, so it was ok, right?
I’m about to offed some of you or irritate you, but here’s the thing, I am tired of being politically correct.
I am tired of the world invading the church instead of the other way around!
I am tired of slapping “Christian” labels on things as if that makes them acceptable to God, thinking He’ll be pleased with us or that it really isn’t that big a deal because we have “grace”.
He is God, His Word is TRUE, always has been, always will be and it’s never going to change. He can’t change!
Halloween is corrupt to the core. Sure, maybe you dress your kids in “cute” costumes, but what are we teaching our children by participating in this “tradition”? Are we desensitizing our children and winking at evil by the things we allow?
The world is doing a good job of desensitizing all of us; from the toys, movies and games that are out today. We’re made to think magic and fairies are cute, and then it gets a little darker with the sorcery and magic in Harry Potter or Lord of the Rings. Where does it end?
The Bible has a lot to say about witchcraft, sorcery and death. Halloweens origins are all wrapped up in that!
Have you ever stopped to ask what the historical and Biblical perspectives are regarding Halloween?
Do we realize when we participate in something, we agree with it? Do we want to agree with witchcraft, evil and glorifying death? Or do we want to be in agreement with the things of God and what brings life and blessing to our lives?
The enemy is out to kill and destroy and he is no respecter of persons. His whole agenda is to separate us from God and His kingdom. He will use any means necessary.
I have heard many people say that Halloween is a great time to meet the neighbours and to “evangelize”, but nowhere does it say to evangelize by joining in vile practices.
I’m sorry, but as a believer we have no business in joining in a day that is all about glorifying wickedness and death!
Yes, you can dress up in “cute” costumes and it can be all in fun, but you can’t take something meant for evil, Christianise it and call it good. No more than you would eat the plate of brownies that only has the teeniest, tiniest piece of poo in it!
I ask you, what message are we sending when we participate in things; when we don’t look any different than the world?
If you want to evangelize, there are plenty of other days of the year to do it on. Go visit the neighbour, go bring them a plate of cookies, go mow their lawn. Love on them. But do it in a way that is glorifying to God.
Please understand, I am not sitting here on my soapbox judging. We all have freedom of choice. My heart’s desire for myself, for my family, friends and those reading this, is to have a fully blessed life! A blessed life comes from walking with God according to His instruction, not what we “think” is right?
It can be hard to make the decision to make a 180 degree turn, but believe me, when we obey God and are faithful in obeying the little things, there are many blessings.
Then choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve…but as for me and my household, we will serve the Lord. Josh 24:15 NIV
