I call on heaven and earth to witness against you today that I have presented you with life and death, the blessing and the curse. Therefore, choose LIFE, so that you will live, you and your descendants, loving Adonai your God, paying attention to what he says and clinging to him-for that is the purpose of your life! Deuteronomy 30:19-20(a) CJB
Our purpose in life is meant to be simple, but I think we overcomplicate it or over spiritualize it.
We all have the same purpose, but we can all choose to do something different with our lives.
Have you ever had an “ah ha” moment…a time where you’ve read something repeatedly, but then, this one time, it makes more sense than ever before?
I was recently reading Deuteronomy 30 and came across verses 19-20(a).
Choosing LIFE, loving Adonai, paying attention to what He says and clinging to Him is the purpose of our life.
That's it! When we do that, we are living out our purpose in whatever we do.
It sounds so simple, doesn’t it? But then why does it seem like there is so much searching for purpose? What does that even mean?
Purpose: the reason for which something is done or created or for which something exists.
So, in other words, we are created to love God, pay attention to what He says and cling to Him.
No more searching for “purpose”, it’s right there!
So often we are unsure of what we should be doing, what our purpose is and we feel aimless…or maybe that’s just been my experience.
God’s Word is simple; love Him and pay attention to what He says.
The question is, do we know what He says?
The Bible is the blueprint for our lives. It doesn’t specifically say become a carpenter, police officer or hairstylist, but it does talk about working and not being idle…and so much more.
There are times in my life where I have felt like “Am I following my purpose? Am I doing what God has called me to do?” I have struggled with feeling like maybe I’m not doing all that God has called me to do/be… I’m not fulfilling my purpose.
I think we may have a skewed idea of what life’s purpose is because the world makes it out to be something it’s not.
Many years ago, I remember trying to figure out what career path to take. I was so stressed trying to figure it out!
Now I realize that there wasn’t a right or wrong answer. We were each given gifts, abilities and talents to use, but it’s up to us to use them well.
Deuteronomy 30:19-20 was the neon sign for my life!! It was such an encouragement to me.
I wasn’t missing something. No more being unsure. I was loving God and walking out the lifestyle He set before me to the best of my ability, and was doing it all for His glory.
I WAS living out my purpose! I was living ON purpose!
No two journeys in life are going to look the same; married, single, old, young, career choice, etc., but we all have the same purpose.
1-Love God…How do you love someone? By spending time with them and doing things that you know bless them.
2-Pay attention to what He says…How do you do that? By reading and studying the Word. We can’t know what it says if we don’t study it for ourselves.
3-Cling to Him…hold tightly to Him: remain close to Him. How do you remain close to someone? By spending time with them and getting to know them (same as #1) There will be trials in your lifetime, clinging to Him during that time and knowing what His Word says and who He is, will carry you through those times.
Your purpose in life is simple!
Don’t delay your next move because you’re waiting for a “sign” or waiting to “find” your purpose.
Now get out there, live your life and fulfill your purpose!
